Vivid birdlife flourishes in the marshes of river Héraðsvötn and the easternmost archipelago is renowned for its wide selection of feathered fauna. River Héraðsvötn and the old bridge across it can easily be accessed from Hofstaðir by walking paths (6km.)  and presents an optimal stroll for lovers of birds and Nature.

Climbers will welcome taking on a pathway guided by sticks which leads  from the old church at Hofsstaðir to the top of mountain Hofsstaðafjall, as well as a scenic ascent on the banks of river Gljúfurá. The view from the top of the mountain is spectacular.

Since time immemorial Hofstaðir has been a presbytery and vicarage. In catholic times the Hofsstaðir churches were consecrated in memory of the Holy Virgin and one of its most cherished possessions was a statue of Mary which was the object of veneration by people far and near. A copy of the statue can be seen in the church.
